The Company
alpha-board gmbh was formed in 1990 in Berlin by managing director Brigitte Gross as a service provider for PCB layout, and has been managed by its owner ever since. We have been constantly adding to the service portfolio that we provide for our clients since the company’s formation:

Development and component selection

Circuit simulation

Layout

EMC, signal integrity and thermal simulation

Production of an initial prototype

Preparation and support for series production

Each project is tailored to meet your specific needs. Our team can offer you personal support in a friendly atmosphere and can implement your projects in a timely manner. You can also use the “Service” area of our website to track the progress of your order online. Our Agile PLM software gives you an opportunity to exchange information and alteration proposals with our engineers, and to document this information.

We make sure that the ideas we develop for you go much further than standard solutions. We are committed to “leading edge technology” and a strong focus on service, allowing us to offer you the highest possible degree of quality, innovation and cost-effectiveness.

Assembly

PCB assembly is performed by reliable partners in Germany. Depending on the technology, number of units and delivery time, we enquire among those assembly partners that might be suitable for your project. In order to do so, we require the parts list for your board. Our partners can procure the components required for assembly on request. Alternatively, you can supply us with these components yourself.

As soon as the PCBs and components have been delivered, we consult with you in order to decide when to begin with the assembly and quality assurance process. We then make arrangements with regard to logistics.

Board Simulation

We can simulate the future characteristics of your products even during the design phase. What do the signal integrity, signal form and signal transfer look like? How will the product behave with respect to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)? We can simulate the behaviour of line pairs, the board or several modules.

The knowledge we gain during this process allows us to optimise the behaviour of the product and to avoid critical situations on the board. Simulation supports the development work, while the tests performed enable more efficient prototyping, even during the design phase. This helps us to shorten the “time to market” for your product.

Hardware Development

We develop electronic products for our clients in the following areas:

Embedded systems

Sensor technology

Mobile communication

During the development process, our engineers follow your instructions with respect to functionality, quality, product requirements, dimensions, external design, price, and many other parameters. We maintain a close working relationship with you throughout the process. We can also simulate the functionality of the developed circuits.

In order to provide you with a better overview for larger projects, we have set up online access to our PLM software under “Service” on our website. The document, configuration and revision management features of our software facilitate and improve cooperation among all of the project partners and team members involved.

Mechanical Design

Our engineers and, where required, selected partners can also provide you with mechanical design services. The focus here is on functional design. Possible areas of application are 3D constructions, collision checks or documentation.

PCB Design

The starting point for PCB design is the logic circuit, the circuit diagram. This is where we turn the data provided to us by the development team into the construction data for the production of a physical circuit (PCB). Our design is based on your instructions with respect to functionality, quality, product specifications (e.g. temperature ranges, stress resistance), dimensions, external design and possible prices for the future product.

Depending on your needs, we use the following design software:

Mentor Expedition

PADS Power PCB

Altium Designer

You can use a ‘viewer’ or your own software licence to consult and approve our designs at any time.

PCBs

As far as the manufacture and supply of PCBs is concerned, we work together with suppliers from across the globe. Depending on the technology, number of units and delivery time, we select an initial group of companies and then contact these companies to discuss the possible realisation of your project. In order to do so, we require the drilling and Gerber data from the layout. We then consult with you in order to organise the manufacture and quality assurance of the PCBs and make arrangements with regard to logistics.

PLC Management

Product Life Cycle Management (PLM) means looking at the entire product creation phase from the first electronic drawing and construction, to production planning, data management and manufacture from a uniform perspective. The life cycle of your product includes a number of different, clearly separated phases:

Feasibility study

Development

New product introduction

Series production

Phase out

Termination

We support your product throughout its life cycle and help you with documentation, configuration and revision handling. We follow up and document trouble reports submitted by your clients and deal with obsolescence management if components used in your product cease to be available for delivery.

In order to provide you with a better overview for larger projects, we have set up online access to our PLM software under “Service” on our website. The document, configuration and revision management features of our software facilitate and improve cooperation among all of the project partners and team members involved.

Quality Assurance

The manufacture and assembly of your PCBs requires a quality assurance procedure that meets your individual needs. Both we and our manufacturing partners consult with you even before the project commences, because the planning and design of a quality assurance procedure that is ideally suited to your project starts as early as in the development and design phase. This allows us to guarantee the highest quality of manufacture and assembly for your products.

R&D

We participate in research projects sponsored by the federal government. This means that we cooperate with partners from industry and research on projects examining the measurement of vital functions in animals, or memory module speed. The experience that we gain from these projects enhances the knowledge of our employees and strengthens our cooperation with our research partners. We are interested in further projects that will allow us to put this experience into practice. In particular, we are interested in using our electronics design knowledge to support research projects in the aviation and aerospace sectors.

Thermal Simulation

We can simulate the thermal behaviour of your product – just as we do with signal integrity and EMC – during the development and design phase. Where do hotspots arise? How should the airflow be optimised in order to dissipate the resulting heat? We can answer these, and similar questions by using thermal simulation.

This simulation gives us an insight that can help us to thermally optimise the design of your product. This means that we can avoid critical hotspots by rearranging the components or changing the cooling of the component group. As a result, we can ensure optimised operating characteristics and a longer life for your product.
