About us
ALung Technologies, Inc. (the “Company”) develops intra and extracorporeal gas exchange devices for the treatment of acute and chronic respiratory disorders
The Company’s current lead product under development is the Hemolung™. This device is an extracorporeal gas exchange device that circulates blood via a small catheter the same size as a dialysis catheter. By directly delivering oxygen (O2) to the blood and removing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the blood, the Hemolung is expected to deliver a clinically and economically superior ventilation solution than mechanical ventilation. This device is capable of supporting patients with acute breathing problems for 7 days, providing their lungs a bridge to recovery.
The Hattler Catheter is an additional product the company has under development. This device is an intravascular gas exchange device that is inserted into the vena cava directly. While sitting in this large vein, the device delivers oxygen (O2) to the blood and removes carbon dioxide (CO2) from the blood.
Alung Technologies introduces the Hemolung System, a novel respiratory support system that replaces mechanical ventilation in the ICU or ER.
Product Information
01.03.12 Equipment for treatment with gases
Hemolung
The Hemolung consists of a small cylindrical oxygenator that is approximately 4 inches in diameter. A cylindrical bundle of micro-porous hollow fiber membranes woven into a mat is wrapped in multiple layers around a central core. Oxygen flows through the hollow fiber membranes, while blood is circulated though the hollow fiber bundle. The core is spun at approximately 1000 RPM, dramatically enhancing gas exchange, as well as serving as a pump to move the blood through the external circuit.
The patient is cannulated with a 12-18F cannula, similar in size to cannulae utilized in hemo-dialysis. The cannula is inserted into the jugular or femoral, and can be tunneled if necessary. Blood flows from the cannula through the Hemolung oxygenator at similar flow rates to hemodialysis.
When the Hemolung console is activated, oxygen flows through the hollow fibers and is transferred into the blood, while carbon dioxide is transferred from the blood into the oxygen stream and carried away from the body.
