“Safire” Breakthrough in Flat-Panel Technology 06.05.2008

Shimadzu, the world-wide manufacturer of diagnostic imaging equipment, has introduced a new milestone in its X-ray technology program. It is the so-called “Safire” flat-panel detector, the world’s first FPD with direct-conversion technology. It offers distinct advantages in image quality and dose efficiency in comparison with indirect-conversion flat-panel.

How does the “Safire” flat-panel technology work?
The new direct-conversion technology now creates clearer high-resolution images with less signal deterioration and reduced noise. The top layer of the flat-panel detector, an X-ray conversion film, converts X-rays passing through the patient’s body directly into electric signals using amorphous Selenium. A TFT (thin-film transistor) array then collects the signal from each pixel and transfers the data immediately to the processing system.

The direct-conversion flat-panel detector is far more sensitive than conventional X-ray films. It produces still images as well as

fluoroscopic images which are qualitatively equal to or better than film, even when the X-ray radiation emitted is reduced from one half to one third of conventional X-ray examination. This dramatically reduces the dosage exposure to the patient.

“Safire” merges economic with diagnostic benefits
Introducing the “Safire direct-conversion FPD” to the medical sector enables digitizing of all X-ray related diagnostic imaging. This allows faster diagnosis, improved diagnostic capabilities and accelerated remote medical diagnostics. In Japan, over 100 “Safire” systems are already in use. The 23 x 23 cm (9-inch-square) or 43 x 43 cm (17-inch-square) “Safire” FPD can be used both for still images and fluoroscopy.

MobileDaRt Digital Radiographic Mobile X-ray System 06.05.2008

The highly anticipated Digital Radiographic Mobile X-ray System

Bringing medical facilities one step closer to being “film-less”
By installing a thin 14″×17″Flat Panel Detector (FPD) in the MobileArt-series mobile X-ray system, (which has been widely praised for its high level of operability), we have enabled the digitization of mobile radiography. Images can be validated on the spot, immediately after exposure. There is no need to read or replace cassettes, and image transfer and network printing is a simple, straight-forward task. Radiography can also be performed for several people without having to consider the number of IP cassettes. All these features and benefits add up to a significant increase in the examination throughput attained with mobile radiography.
The MobileDaRt Direct Radiographic Mobile X-ray System meets the needs of facilities that are thinking of “ilm-less”operation.

Fully digital color ultrasound system for interdisciplinary applications
The SDU-1100 features a fully digital platform supporting the integration of various applications, and is adaptable to suit every physician’s needs, whether in private practice or hospital.
Key elements are the excellent image quality, the sensitive color Doppler module as well as the storable default settings and diagnostics results – including dynamic image sequences and summary reports.

The fully digital system architecture offers a high-performance productivity level. A newly developed chip enables focussing down to pixel level in order to display the subtlest differentiation in tissue structure. Optimized broadband technology increases the usable frequency spectrum from 2 up to 15 MHz. High-quality, high-speed digital filters improve the signal-noise level and ensure precise acquisition of weak signal information.

Advanced Human Engineering – this term succinctly expresses that the SDU-1100, through its ergonomic design, is fully adaptable to the needs of every physician. In addition, many integrated functions increase diagnostic efficiency, for instance diagnostic- or patient-specific image ‘Quick Keys’ or ‘Macro Imaging’ parameters.
